Career Summary
Mayumi Parry has taught Japanese as a foreign language at tertiary levels in Australia since 1992. Prior to this, she taught English and Japanese in Japan.
Mayumi is interested in ways to maximise the learning experience for students participating in exchange programs and has recently collaborated with colleagues from other universities on a Japanese government-funded research project, "An investigation of the experiences of Japanese exchange students in Australian universities.”
Mayumi currently coordinates two short exchange programs for QUT students to study in Japan for a month: Mukogawa (July) and Sonoda (November). She is working on her PhD to investigate the effect of homestay on the development of intercultural competence.
Mayumi has also been involved in a number of projects that incorporate multimedia into the Japanese language program at QUT.

- the effect of in-country experience, particularly through homestay in Japan
- the effect of interactive multimedia applications for teaching Japanese language and culture
- assessment and evaluation
