How can the Student Learning Advisers help you?
The Student Learning Adviser (SLA) initiative has been developed to aid business students achieve their study goals with academic support from peers (current students who have completed the first year at least).
The SLAs are undergraduate and postgraduate business students who have already completed the core subjects and most are nearing completion of their degrees. There are also postgraduate SLAs available to assist those needing help with the beginning of their Masters. The SLA’s are available each day of the week during business hours, and we also offer extended hours two days per week.
SLAs can assist you with:
- Helping you work through problem areas in your study
- Getting you on track with tutorial work
- Pointing you in the right direction with assignments
- Designing a strategy to succeed in exams
- Assisting with your writing and presentation skills (including some proof-reading)
- Developing your study skills and working out a study plan
- Referring you to a wide range of services the University offers
- Building networks within the University
- Helping you through student life by sharing our experience
Our Contract
As the Faculty of Business requires students to do their own work, the Faculty places strict limitations on how the SLAs can help students. The SLAs will ask you to provide a Criteria Reference Sheet/Matrix to ensure that you are meeting the objectives of the unit and that they do not do your work for you. They will help you as much as they can but cannot give you solutions or do set tasks for you. They can help you more easily if you can show evidence of your prior attempt at the task you are seeking help with.
Appointments are usually for 45 minutes, however, if there are no students waiting we will be happy to extend the meeting. We will always try to keep an SLA free for people who have not booked in advance.
Our service is not intended to be a proofreading facility but we will provide support where we can; generally we can check the first page or two of a written piece and then offer feedback which can be applied to the whole document.
If a unit coordinator finds that a student’s work is not their own, the student will face heavy penalties and possibly exclusion. To view the University’s policy on plagiarism please view the procedures for academic dishonesty.
If you are unsure whether you are plagiarizing the work of another, there are resources for students to avoid plagiarism.
Where are the SLAs?
The SLAs are located at B113A, Level 1, B Block, Gardens Point Campus (see campus map). You can also link up to the SLAs using the Eluminate service (presently only available to Caboolture students).
Appointments aren't necessary for assistance with core subjects or general study advice, but if you would like to discuss subjects relevant to your major, appointments are encouraged.
To make an appointment, please email businessmentors@qut.edu.au with :-
- Your name and student ID number
