The Faculty of Business offers postgraduate research programs at honours, masters and doctoral level across a broad range of skill areas. These research degrees are designed to develop your ability to address a specific problem in the workplace or assist you to investigate an academic area of interest through researching and presenting findings to others in your field.

Research Courses
Our Bachelor of Business (Honours) provides high-achieving undergraduate students with advanced analytical, theoretical and empirical skills that differentiate them from other graduates. Honours students conduct advanced studies in their business discipline, developing capacity to conduct rigorous independent research. The program can mean an edge in the workplace and prepare you for further research study.
Masters by Research students complete a significant piece of supervised research, pursuing advanced studies within a chosen discipline. The Master of Business (Research) typically involves one semester (six months) of coursework in research skill development followed by a 12-month research program which culminates in a thesis of approximately 60 000 words.
Doctor of Philosophy (Business) students are challenged to
demonstrate academic rigour in a broad field of learning
and to make an original and substantial contribution
to knowledge in that field. The PhD program normally
includes assessed coursework that supports a candidate’s
research and preparation of a thesis of approximately
100 000 words.

The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit
Studies is committed to the advancement of issues
related to philanthropy and nonprofit organisations
through active research and information sharing.
The National Centre for Economic Research is dedicated
to enhancing econometric research and disseminating the
outcomes to policymakers, business professionals and the
academic community.
The schools within the Faculty also conduct research within their specialist areas.
Key research programs
Entrepreneurship and Innovation is a multidisciplinary research program with a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. Members harness knowledge in new ways to develop and provide high-quality research while developing strategic links with international partners and within the University.
Infrastructure Management examines how people and
processes in specific organisational cultures can best be
managed to achieve strategic organisational goals and
good quality work life. The focus is on understanding
factors which assist organisational performance, as well as
individual well-being.
Services Innovation Research provides a focal point for research on technological and non-technical innovation in the services sector across marketing, management, economics and accounting.
International quality
We are the first Australian business school to achieve accreditation by the three leading international bodies – AACSB International, EQUIS, and AMBA. All three accreditations are hallmarks of excellence and recognition of the quality of our courses by our international peers.
How to get started
We encourage you to contact relevant research staff to find out more about the course you wish to undertake and review the details to be provided with your application. For many research applicants this means choosing a topic and selecting a supervisor. In some cases you may be required only to identify the appropriate course. In these cases, the Faculty will provide you with scaffolding coursework that will help you to develop your topic and identify your supervisory team at the start of your research studies.
