About The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Non profit studies
Myles McGregor-Lowndes
The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Non profit studies is basically a research centre to bring the benefits of teaching, research in community service to the Australian community. We provide teaching in the post graduate field to students. We supervise masters and doctoral students by research and we do lots of community service which brings useful information to our research to the non profit organisations of the community.

The research that the centre does is very valuable. Particularly in the sense that they’re very proactive in getting out into the community, so the not for profit community and the full profit community and trying to ensure that everyone’s educated and is aware of what’s going one.

One of the great things about studying at ACPNS is the alumni group that support present and past students. The alumni raise funds to provide scholarships and travel bursaries for student so that they can study at ACPNS and there’s also a great network that builds up around the alumni students supporting each other in their studies and then back out in the community in their work, it’s really good.

The centre is doing pioneering research in a whole host of areas so for the first time that we analysed the taxation statistics on giving so that we can tell you the difference between a primary school teacher or a secondary school teacher headmaster and a university lecturer, how they give and where they give and to whom they give. We are doing research on how non profit boards can measure their governance and better their governance.

The centre has pioneered a range of teaching techniques. Many of the discussions that are held in the centre, many of the presentations like visiting people are provided as podcasts so students and indeed anyone in the community can go and download these talks at their convenience and listen to them. This has been a great asset particularly for people who have difficulty getting to the centre.

The centre is collaboration of academics from different parts of the business faculty. It includes adjunct professors from the non profit sector, it included overseas researchers and includes CEO’s fund raisers and people from the sector philanthropist who are interested to contribute to useful research.

I think there’s a lot of doors that open for you once you’ve finished studying at the centre. Certainly other people in the not for profit environment recognise that you’ve got that degree that focuses on their particular industry and the nuances of their particular industry so it’s something that is seen as being very highly regarded to not just not for profits but other people out there in the community who are in the full profit land as well, who seek to understand what these not for profits are trying to do.
