Current Research Activities

Managing Innovation in the Public Sector (Up-stream Innovation)

My most recent research interest takes a holistic view of managing and "exploiting" innovation within public-sector organisations. My most recent is a study of innovation and intellectual property management within the Queensland public sector. The project developed a model for managing innovation in a public sector context. We are currently developing a book proposal for Edward Elgar on this topic. An earlier project investigated the formation and development of a "Purchaser-Provider" structure (internal market) within and around the Queensland Department of Primary Industries. The study tracked the influence of this structural change on the management of R&D processes within the organisation.

New Product Development (Mid-stream Innovation)

A second area of research interest is the new product development process. This is a natural extension of my interest in the product life cycle. My particular area of interest is the role of business networks during the NPD process. A project in this area was completed with colleagues at Monash University (former PhD student Dr. Xueli Huang and Professor Bill Schroder) in 1996 that looked at the impact of the user-manufacturer relationship during new product development projects in the Chinese iron and steel industry. This research is continuing with a cross-national study "Global Goods and Services Development Programs: A Benchmarking Study of Success" with Prof Elko Klienschmidt and Ulrike de Brentani. An ARC Discovery Grant has been submitted in this area.

Diffusion of Innovation and the Product Life Cycle (Downstream Innovation)

The primary focus of my early career research has been the area of aggregate sales modelling, including diffusion models and models of the product life cycle. This research stream has developed from my doctoral research. I have contributed to this area with a number of new models, including models of time varying replacement, multiple purchases and the product life cycle. My recent contributions in this area focussed on the Australian automobile industry and from a consultancy project for an Agricultural chemical company.
