Dr Claire Gardiner

The purpose of this research was to examine knowledge sharing practices in an organisational setting, in order to identify the mediating influence of relations between organisations and their workers, and the relations among workers, on knowledge generation and sharing. A qualitative, longitudinal, single case method was adopted. Data revealed that factors arising from environmental complexity, locally constructed, socially situated practice and the worker's  beliefs about their day-to-day experiences, shape individuals' orientations to knowledge generation and sharing practice.

We conduct work-life balance research. In this project, we investigate how organisations can enable staff to better balance their work and non-work lives. We examine how individuals can have more meaningful lives, while organisations also maintain productivity levels, and strengthen their competitive advantage.

Dr Fran Finn

Executive coaching has been described as a multibillion dollar industry, but to date, there is very little empirical research investigating its effectiveness.  Fran Finn is conducting research in the public sector investigating executive coaching as an alternate transformational leadership development approach.  The psychological and behavioural effects of executive coaching are detailed in the presentation.

This project investigates young people's experiences at work, particularly secondary school students (as more than 50% of high school students work while studying). It also investigates the experiences of those who support them (unions, NGOs) and those who employ them. The project is funded by an ARC linkage grant between QUT, Griffith University, Catholic Education Brisbane, Education Queensland, the Young Workers Advisory Service and the Queensland Council of Unions.

Dr Karen Becker

This research project explored the impact of change and innovation in the workplace on individuals.  The result was the identification of 8 critical factors to assist individuals and groups to make the transition to something new and "unlearn" old ways.  Lessons for managers were drawn from the research.
